no future, no guilt
Is the human desire for offspring an abusive, unethical remnant of an evolutionary desire for survival of the species? By dismissing the conditions into which we’re bringing children, are we being reckless? Are we ignoring the rights of a future generation? Should we all just sterilize ourselves and “party our way into extinction?”
South African philosopher David Benatar thinks so. His view of human existence is one of where banal struggles outweigh brief moments of ecstasy. Our “tolerance” of such a sad state proves that we’re all victims of a sham. In other words: life is nasty, brutish, and short. And to force another into such a life should be criminal.
